30 Days of Hymns, the Sacred Triad, Brighid #4: prophecy

Hail to thee, Brighid
Fire-eater
Fire-maker
in your honor I light the flame
kindle it close
keep it licking at the edges
of my mind
so I may see the future
without burning up

Let your fire protect me
from the flames of folly
the sting of hubris
let me fill up with your flame
and when I open my mouth to speak
let your voice spill forth

Let me bring your words
to a weary populace

I sit in front of the flame
and watch it endlessly
waiting for your message
to burst forth where blue fades into orange
From this riot of colors will I know
the shape of things to come
and when all has burned away
the tatters of my clothes lost in the wind
my skin smeared with ash and soot
the fire in me gone out

I will walk barefoot
to your sacred spring
I will submerge my fire-kissed flesh
I will let the water heal me
and when I open my eyes
beneath the surface
let me see your face
in a tangle of reeds and rocks

teach me, Fire Eater, Fire Maker
teach me to see what unfolds
teach me to speak the truth
teach me
prophecy
without madness
teach me
to speak
with kindness

fires within me
fires around me
fires below me
teach me to see
faces in the flames
burn away the sickness
and leave me with clarity

Hail, Brighid
Keeper of the Future
let me keep your light burning
that we may find our way
into the great unknown.
